Phase 2
Phase 2 is anticipated to start in September 2026.
The works will take place on Bridle Road, with junction improvements on Bridle Way, Farriers Way, and Vesty Road. The changes will also see a cut through from Vesty Road to Bridle Way.
The works are anticipated to take around 12 months to complete.
Traffic management
Traffic management during the works will see Bridle Way become temporarily one-way from Netherton Way to Park Lane. Traffic coming from Park Lane into Bridle Road will not be permitted during the works.
Sefton Council commissioned an independent study to establish the least disruptive traffic management option.
One-way vs temporary traffic lights.
The temporary one-way system allows longer sections of the road to be worked on at a time. Temporary traffic-lights would restrict the sections of road that could be worked on, and double the length of time for the completion of works to 2 years.
One-way also allows the contractor and utility companies to work on different sections of the road at the same time but in different locations. This helps shorten the length of time to complete the works.
Traffic modelling predicted that temporary traffic lights would cause longer traffic queues and potentially longer delays than for the one-way option. One-way also means journeys going towards Park Lane are unaffected, while traffic-lights would affect both ways.
Will the one-way be in place for the full 12 months?
Yes, when travelling from Park Lane to Netherton Way. However, as individual phases of work are completed, sections of the road will be reopened to two-way traffic where it is safe and practical to do so. This means sections will be re-opened to two-way traffic before the end of the 12 months.
58 Shuttle Bus
The 58 bus will be affected by the temporary one-way on Bridle Road.
Sefton Council has worked with Merseytravel to put on a 58 Shuttle Bus, starting on Monday 21st September.
The traffic management will be suspended from 27th November for the December period. Bridle Road will resume two-way traffic throughout the month of December, and the normal 58 bus service will resume.
After the Christmas period, works will resume on Monday 4th January. The temporary-one way system on Bridle Road will be reinstated and the shuttle bus will resume (assuming passenger numbers are sufficient).

Phase 2 Changes

Phase 2 - Bridle Road
Phase 2 will see improvements on 1.2km of road, 2.4km of footpath, and significant improvements for junctions with the introduction of signalised crossings. Bridle Road will see improved footpaths and cycle paths.
Changes from Netherton Way direction Park Lane
- Existing crossing on Bridle Road near Netherton Way will be upgraded to a controlled crossing with traffic lights
- Improved uncontrolled pedestrian and cycle crossing on Bridle Way by John Sutch Cranes
- A new pedestrian island at an uncontrolled crossing point between Bridle Way and Farriers Way
- Improved uncontrolled crossing after Farriers Way junction
- A relocated bus stop and bus shelter before Bridle Way
- Improved uncontrolled pedestrian and cycle crossing on Bridle Way
- The junction of Vesty Road and Bridle Way will see new segregated parallel crossings for pedestrian and cyclists, upgrading crossings onto every arm of the junction.
- A new crossing near Hereford Drive on Bridle Road, and an improved cycle transition onto Hereford Drive.
- Existing crossings on Bridle Road/Park Lane junction to be upgraded to Toucan crossings for use by both cyclists and pedestrians.
Phase 2 - Vesty Road/Deltic Way
Phase 2 will see the introduction of a new pedestrian and cycle route between Vesty Road to Deltic Way, improving the access to the industrial estate and connectivity to Aintree Station.
There will be an introduction of a textured surface at the entry to the cycle track, lighting columns installed and a new segregated footway and two way cycle track.
Phase 1
Phase 1 saw improvements to Dunnings Bridge Road and Netherton Way. Find out more about Phase 1 that was completed in February 2026.
The scheme improved junctions and introduced improved walking and cycling paths and crossings. This makes it easier for vehicles, cyclists and those walking to move around the area.
