"The workforce was resilient, staff told us they were supportive of each other and supported by leaders. Leaders were visible and approachable; they were not isolated from the wider workforce or external partnerships. We heard from staff how they interacted and engaged with people and partners. We Care
We’re proud to be an open and collaborative Council, completely committed to putting Sefton residents at the heart of everything we do. In Adult Social Care, there’s a real sense of energy and purpose — a shared passion for delivering the very best support to the people who live here.
Like every council, we face challenges, but we face them together. Our colleagues are dedicated, creative, and compassionate, and their commitment shines through in the way they support our communities every day.
People who choose a career in local government are driven by more than financial reward. They’re motivated by the chance to make a real difference — to use their skills, talents, and kindness to improve the lives of those around them. And here in Sefton, that purpose is something we value deeply.
We innovate
In Sefton, we’re not afraid to try new things. We’re always learning, adapting, and finding better ways to support the people who rely on us. Right now, we’re working with Partners4Change to test new, innovative ways of working across our Social Work teams — reducing unnecessary paperwork and strengthening truly person‑centred practice so we can focus on what really matters: people.
Our Development Team is also exploring how Artificial Intelligence can help us behind the scenes — improving the quality of our information, making our content easier for everyone to access, and reducing time spent on admin. This means our teams have more time to do what they do best: supporting our community.
We’re also leading the way with our Technology Enabled Care offer, always looking for new tools and technologies that help people stay safe, independent, and connected.

Just imagine knowing that your time, effort, and energy are genuinely changing lives. That’s what drives us every day. We’re united by a shared purpose: to create a safer, healthier, more supportive environment for everyone in our community. And the pride we take in that work is something truly special.
We Support Our Teams to Thrive
74% of our Adult Social Care staff say that employee engagement in Sefton is positive.
81% tell us they have regular one‑to‑one time with their line manager each month.
78% feel they receive constructive, helpful feedback that supports their development.
These insights reflect something we’re really proud of — a culture where people feel supported, listened to, and valued.
We’re also fortunate to have both a dedicated Principal Occupational Therapist and a Principal Social Worker. Their leadership helps drive high‑quality practice, champion positive change, and ensure our frontline teams receive strong professional guidance and support. Their expertise plays a key role in shaping services that are safe, effective, and focused on the people who need us most.
We are Passionate, Committed, Supported and Valued
In our most recent survey, 91% of colleagues said they are committed to helping Sefton Council succeed — a reflection of the pride and purpose shared across our teams.
Here in Sefton, we have high aspirations for everyone who works with us. We know that our people are our greatest asset, and we’re dedicated to giving them the support they need to do their best work. That means creating an environment where staff feel valued, listened to, and genuinely appreciated.
We want everyone to have opportunities to grow, develop, and build a career they’re proud of — while still enjoying a healthy work‑life balance. When our people feel happy and supported, we know they can deliver the best possible service for our community.
We invest in our people
At Sefton, we believe in helping every colleague grow, thrive, and feel confident in the work they do. That’s why investing in our people is one of our biggest priorities.
- 93% of Adult Social Care staff told us they’ve had a Professional Development Review (PDR) within the last year.
- 54% said their PDR helps them understand how their work contributes to the wider priorities of the Council.
Every member of staff has a dedicated one‑to‑one professional development review with their manager each year. This isn’t just a tick‑box exercise — it’s a meaningful conversation about strengths, aspirations, and the support needed to develop.
Our Training and Development Team then reviews this information to understand what skills our workforce needs now and in the future. From there, they carry out a full training analysis to:
- Strengthen our workforce
- Support people who want to learn, progress, or specialise
- Make sure we have the right mix of skills across all teams
- Ensure our community receives the very best support
It’s all part of our commitment to helping colleagues feel confident, capable, and supported — so they can keep making a real difference for the people of Sefton.
We Listen
Listening is at the heart of how we work in Sefton. We regularly run internal staff surveys, and in response to what our teams tell us, every member of staff takes part in our twice‑yearly “We Are Listening” sessions. These sessions give us the chance to share how we’ve acted on feedback, celebrate what’s working well, and agree on what we can improve together.
We also listen closely to the people who access our support. When individuals and families told us they needed more specialist understanding around Autism and Learning Disabilities, we created a dedicated Learning Disability Social Work Team. This team brings specialist skills, lived‑experience awareness, and additional training to make sure people receive the most tailored, supportive service possible.
In Sefton Adult Social Care, we work hard to stay connected to our community. We regularly gather views through surveys, conversations, and feedback processes to make sure people feel heard — and to ensure we keep learning, improving, and shaping our services around what matters most to them.
